ES module

In short and in plain language

An ES module is a building block for scripts in the browser.

ES is the base of the language for these scripts. It is set down in a standard. The browser can load modules in this form directly.

Tools find unused code in them more easily and can leave it out.

Definition
An ES module is a script in the standardized module format of JavaScript. It provides code with export and pulls in other code with import. ES stands for ECMAScript, the standardized core of the JavaScript language. Browsers can load ES modules directly, and tools can remove unused code from them more easily than from older module formats.
