HEIC
In short and in plain language
HEIC is a format for photos. iPhones use it, for example.
At the same quality, the photos are smaller than in the older JPEG format.
Not every server can handle it. So the photos are often turned into JPEG before upload.
Definition
HEIC is a file format for photos that iPhones, among others, use. It is based on HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format, and contains images compressed with HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding); at the same quality, the files are smaller than JPEG. Not every server or program can process HEIC, so such photos are often converted to JPEG before upload.
